Australia is very progressive.  Indeed, Sydney has become one of the great gay destinations in the world because of its laid back, welcoming attitude.  You will find an international assortment of new friends.  Your biggest concern should be applying plenty of sun screen.

New Zealand can be better described as conservatively tolerant.  While the customs are similar to those in Australia, growing out of similar cultures, New Zealand is more socially conservative.  Still, nothing to worry about except taking pictures of the gorgeous scenery.
