Prague, the capital and largest city of the Czech Republic, is a traditional cultural center for Europe. Known for the beauty of its city center and surrounding areas, and its myriad cultural and historical attractions, Prague today is the most popular European city destination for gay travelers.

Known as “the city of a hundred spires,” Prague boasts of beautiful architecture that is representative of the various architectural movements that have swept through the city throughout history. Saunter through the city center and you will find medieval castles, gothic cathedrals, baroque synagogues, art-nouveau hotels, neoclassic museums, renaissance mansions, neo-renaissance museums, modern shopping malls, and post-modern office buildings. The city spans seven hills, giving residents and travelers a sense that Prague is several connected towns, rather than one metropolitan center. The many neighborhoods that make up the city of Prague each have their own distinct charm and character, which merits exploration. Most notable for travelers are the Old Town, New Town, the Jewish Quarter, and the Hradcany neighborhoods.

At the center of Old Town you will find the Old Town Square, which is surrounded by must-see churches and cathedrals and offers tourists a place to rest and people watch. Also in Old Town you will find the Charles Bridge and the Astronomical Clock, two famous landmarks from Prague’s medieval era. Not far from Old Town is New Town, quite old in its own right, where you will find Wenceslas Square, another central point of the city. Located only a short walk from there are both the National Theatre, where you can see an opera or ballet, and the National Museum, where Prague’s natural, scientific, and historical collections are on display. Visit the Jewish Quarter to see a variety of historic synagogues, an old Jewish Cemetery, and Franz Kafka’s birthplace. Hradcany neighborhood is home to the Prague Castle—the largest ancient castle in the world—which has been home to kings, emperors, and presidents since its inception, and is an absolute “must-see” during your stay in Prague.

It is said that Prague does not have one gay village; rather, gay venues are spread throughout the city. Outside of central Prague (New Town and Old Town) neighborhoods such as Vinohrady, Zizkov, and Smichov have bars, clubs, cafes, spas, accommodations, shops, and restaurants oriented towards gay and mixed clientele. Friends, a welcoming dance and lounge bar in central Prague, comes recommended as a good place to get started.
